As the environmental crisis grows and greenwashing becomes more widespread, fewer and fewer publications are holding the line. Terrain does the job, with uncompromising hard news, fine feature-writing, and incisive columns on nature, politics, natural history, gardening, and hopeful enterprises, as well as guest editorials by renowned authors. We also take care to offer clear, striking design and professional illustrations that reflect the beauty of a world worth saving. Terrain has been published by the Ecology Center in one form or another since 1971. It has grown into a widely-acclaimed magazine with its emphasis on context and the interrelation of issues from biotech and toxic redlining to sacred sites and wilderness preservation, in the Bay Area and beyond. A 1999 Project Censored Award winner, Terrain has received numerous accolades for clear news and features, striking design, and luminous writing. The Independent Press Association calls Terrain "the perfect candidate to become a voice for national environmental awareness."
Published by a nonprofit, Terrain relies on volunteers. If you have an interest in environmental news and some time to spare, you could consider volunteering at Terrain. Specific internship positions are also available. Terrain also periodically posts opportunities for reporting and writing.
