Accounting Assistant
Description
The Accounting Assistant will provide direct support to all activities of the agency’s Financial section under the supervision of the Financial Manager.
Terms
Part-time; 18 hours per week; work hours are between 8 and 5, Monday through Friday, schedule to be arranged.

$18 per hour

Minimum Required Skills
- High school graduation or GED equivalent
- Possession of a valid California driver’s license
- Three years of experience in bookkeeping or field related to accounting
- Considerable knowledge of basic accounting principles and practices
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Excel and Word
- Skill in operating and inputting data into financial accounting software with accuracy and efficiency; prefer Peachtree accounting experience
- Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions and meet deadlines
- Ability to work with minimal supervision; strong work ethic
- Ability to communicate effectively and courteously
- Ability and willingness to learn new software applications
Duties
- Process invoices and conduct follow-up with vendors, customers, and clients as needed to identify and resolve discrepancies.
- Process payments; prepare checks for mailing, distribution and delivery.
- Reconcile bank statements and work with bank representatives to identify and resolve discrepancies and problems.
- Reconcile deposits with programming paperwork and prepare deposits for delivery to bank.
- Develop new and maintain existing spreadsheets to manage accounting information and prepare reports for management.
- Assist in developing procedures and policies to improve accounts management.
- Ensure accuracy of and maintain accounting documents and file systems.
- Provide backup for payroll processing as needed.
- Perform simple to moderately difficult arithmetic calculations.
- Perform simple to moderately complex operations in financial accounting.
- Process daily mail and distribute appropriately.
- Provide backup for dispatch radio and answer telephone for Recycling operation as needed.
- Run errands to San Pablo Central Programs office, post office, bank, and other trips as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements
- Use of a computer keyboard and monitor for a major portion of working hours
- Must operate a motor vehicle in the routine accomplishment of duties (running errands)
- Must be able to sit for extended periods
- Must operate standard office equipment, copier, telephones, two-way radio
