Food Day 2011
Taking a cue from the institution of Earth Day, The Center for Science in the Public Interest has brought together a number of visionaries working in the realm of food and created a nation-wide event known as Food Day. The first Food Day will be held October 24th, 2011. Organizers describe it as a day that "seeks to bring together Americans from all walks of life...to push for healthy, affordable food produced in a sustainable, humane way." Organizations around the country are planning events for the day, centered around six Food Day principles:
- Reduce diet-related disease by promoting safe, healthy foods.
- Support sustainable farms & limit subsidies to big agribusiness.
- Expand access to food and alleviate hunger.
- Protect the environment & animals by reforming factory farms.
- Promote health by curbing junk-food marketing to kids.
- Support fair conditions for food and farm workers.
The Ecology Center has organized a series of events associated with Food Day, as have other members of the Berkeley Food Policy Council. See the great variety of events below!
