On April 22, 1970, both the Ecology Center and the Earth Day movement were born. Since that time, the Ecology Center has had major impacts at the local, national, and international levels. On April 22, 2010 we will gather with our friends, enjoy delicious food and wine, and celebrate all that we have achieved. More importantly, we will look to the future and hear visions for what the next 40 years may hold. What ideas will go mainstream next?
The evening will include environmental leaders, thinkers, and activists, including:
- Senator Loni Hancock, California State District 09, an environmental champion that has spent over three decades in local, state, and federal government.
- Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates, who has brought a lifetime of local and statewide public service and environmental advocacy to the Mayor's office.
- Carl Anthony, one of our nation's top environmental and community visionaries. He is the founder of Urban Habitat and Breakthrough Communities and is the former President of Earth Island Institute.
- Daniel Katz, who co-founded the Rainforest Alliance in 1986 at the age of 24, is now Environment Program Director at The Overbrook Foundation and a speaker at colleges and universities around the country on the topics of the environment, leadership and civic responsibility.
- Dennis Hayes, Organizer of the first Earth Day will deliver a special video address.
- Assemblymember Nancy Skinner, California State District 14, Chairs the Assembly's Natural Resources Committee. Skinner is a nationally renowned leader in the fight against global warming.
- Country Joe McDonald will play a mini-concert. Woodstock veteran Country Joe has recorded 33 albums and written hundreds of songs over a career spanning 50 years.
Dinner will be catered by the award-winning Hotel Shattuck’s Five. Executive Chef, Scott Howard, and Chef de Cuisine, Bob Simontacchi, have built their menu around a farm-to-table approach supporting local, sustainable, and organic providers. Most ingredients will be sourced from the Ecology Center’s Berkeley Farmers’ Markets.
The VIP Reception will be an intimate wine and hors d’oeuvres reception where the event sponsors can meet the evening’s speakers and top leaders.
